Medium-Density Fibreboard (MDF) is a modern material that has been gaining popularity in the home construction, particularly the carpentry industry recently. As a cheaper option for wood, MDF is used to build a lot of household items including furniture, bookshelves, display cabinets, desks, wall panels, and storage units.

MDF is an inexpensive engineered wood material. It is a composite of wood fibre and resins fused in a high-heat, high-pressure process. It is very easy to cut and process, making it useful in upscale applications such as custom trim work and cabinets. It has all the desirable features of wood – strength, toughness, and warmth. Although MDF is a great and cheaper alternative to real wood, it is very difficult to paint due to being so highly porous and troublesome with the dreaded “grain rise” which is almost impossible to get rid of without the correct techniques.
